Japan v France - The wine off

Exploring Japanese wine - tutored tasting with Japanese nibbles

Join us for an evening of  tasting the Lumiere wine taking place at the Chisou Japanese Restaurant.

Chisou Knightsbridge

Tuesday, 30 June 2015 from 19:00 to 20:00 (BST)

The Lumiere winery has been creating quality sparkling wine since the 19th Century. Today they are producing bottles which hold their own on the world stage and are starting to gain recognition outside of Japan.

To test this we will taste 2 wines from the Lumiere family against comparable French wines and a sake to see how they stand up. We will also have a go at matching the wines with food.

The evening includes

-        2 sparkling wines, one Japanese one French

-        2 white wines, one Japanese one French

-        A Japanese sake to compare

-        Japanese nibbles to pair

-        Tutored tasting by Clio Giudici from Amathus Wines

-        Lots of fun

The food served will be as small nibbles and will not constitute a full dinner but guests are welcome to stay on and eat in the restaurant.

Tequila & Mezcal Fest 2014 (22nd- 23rd November 2014)

We sponsored Tequila & Mezcal Fest 2014 !

We felt like we were in Mexico this weekend, surounded by Mexican music, food, and most importantly Mezcal and Tequila!

Tequila & Mezcal Fest was a unique celebration of Mexico's most popular and ancestral beverages It was born with one objective, to educate consumers on how to drink these two traditional agave spirits.Tequila & Mezcal Fest is a project to support existing and new brands of Tequila and Mezcal in the UK market.

Tequila is defined by the exclusive use of the blue agave (also known as Weber Blue Agave, maguey azul, blue maguey or agave tequilana Weber azul); and by a delimited geographical area. Five states in Mexico have the right to produce tequila – Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Guanajuato, Michoacán and Nayarit, though almost all production takes place in Jalisco around the towns of Tequila and Tepatitlan. The volcanic soil surrounding the region is well suited to growing the agave and produces more than 300 million plants each year. Currently there are over 100 distilleries in Mexico producing over 600 brands, however over 2000 brands have been registered over time

Mezcal is a distilled spirit produced from the agave/maguey plant and its popularity has constantly been growing in the UK. Their alcohol levels are between 38 and 49% ABV. The agave plant belongs to its own family, the Agavaceae. Agave plants could take between 6 to 25 years to mature depended on type of agave and were its grown, after which time they are manually harvested by highly trained ‘jimadors’ or ‘magueyeros’. They are then cooked, ground, fermented and distilled.

If you want to find out more about Tequila and Mezcal then please pop in to any of our four stores; Amathus City, Amathus Knightsbridge, Amathus Soho, Amathus Shoreditch. Alternatively, please follow the links to find out further information, as well as to find out more about the Mezcal and Tequila we stock exclusively here at amathus.

We had a fantastic evening; and we were honoured to be able to support in helping towards such a magnificent cause. Amathus is proud to have sponsored BBC Children in Need, as it means that the running and profit from the event can go towards what it is meant to; helping disadvantaged children and young people across the UK.

BBC Children in Need provides grants to projects in the UK which focus on children and young people; supporting small and large organisations which empower children and extend their life choices. Every penny from the money raised or donated goes towards helping disadvantaged children and young people right here in the UK. BBC Children in Need are able to make this promise because they use investment income and Gift Aid to cover all running costs; this means that you can be sure the money you donate makes a real difference.

One of the most beautiful of theatres – a place that casts a glow around anything that’s put on there’
~ The Guardian

A little History Behind the Magic...

The Mahogany Bar, was built around 1725, said to have been a public house, trading under many names over the years including The Albion Saloon and The Prince of Denmark. In 1828 it was luxuriously and elaborately refurbished with a magnificent mahogany bar and fittings which was unprecedented for a pub interior at that time and earned the nick-name that is still used today.

Frequented by the sailing community, the bar's fame spread to every port across the globe and it was even claimed that visiting sailors may not have heard of St Paul's Cathedral but they knew exactly where to find The Mahogany Bar. Sadly, the famous fixtures and fittings of this remarkable bar have been stripped away over the years but the atmosphere lingers on.

John Wilton bought the business in c.1850 and built his ‘Magnificent New Music Hall’ in 1859 behind the pub. After years of neglect Wilton's Music Hall, the last surviving Grand Music Hall left in the world and The Mahogany Bar that still sits as part of it, is now being lovingly and sensitively brought back to life.

Events range from live music to comedy nights and classical concerts to theatre. The building is sadly still under threat as 40% of Wilton's remains derelict but a Public Appeal is underway to raise the last remaining £300,000 needed to secure the building's future forever, providing much needed structural stability to the fragile space without changing any of it's current character.

Search for 2013 UK Brand Ambassodor for Koshu:(13th February 2013)

We are delighted to announce its inaugural campaign to find a UK Brand Ambassador, the recipient of which will win a trip to Japan!

Koshu of Japan

The search will officially begin at the Koshu of Japan annual trade and press tasting on Thursday 21 February. Guests at the tasting will be able to learn all about the wines and the producers, who will be flying in from Japan especially for the event, as well as take part in a unique Koshu of Japan tutored food and wine matching. Prospective candidates will be invited to submit evidence of their knowledge and appreciation of the wines, styles and region of Koshu of Japan. They will also need to explain their efforts in promoting the wines in the UK market.

“Announcing this exciting initiative is the next stage in Koshu of Japan’s promotional investment in the UK market.” commented Lynne Sherriff MW, Koshu of Japan’s UK and European Director. Sherriff continued, “It has been just three years since the producers first brought their wines to the market and they have been rewarded with some great listings and business partnerships throughout the trade. These wines, with their naturally lower alcohol and food-friendly taste profile, really are ‘the ones to watch’.”

The chosen candidate will win a trip to Japan later this year, including visits to the leading wineries in the Yamanashi prefecture - including Soryu and Lumiere wineries - and an overnight stay in Tokyo. Two runners-up will each be given £300 and £200 respectively towards a meal at a one of London’s leading Japanese restaurants.

HERE'S HOW! Simply list our Koshu range from the end of the month and be in with winning this trip of a lifetime, all expenses paid!

If you think this could be you, please contact your rep or, if you don't have one. email us at info@amathusdrinks.com and we will get in touch with more information on how we can help!

More details of the UK Brand Ambassador programme will be released at the annual trade tasting and on our website afterwards. Registration for the 2013 Koshu of Japan Annual Trade and Press Tasting is now open: www.koshuofjapan.co.uk

New Mezcals Arriving in March!(18th January 2013)

We are very excited about welcoming two great brands of mezcal to our portfolio, from the Los Danzantes distillery in Oaxaca, Mexico. They will be arriving at our warehouse around March but here is a sneaky peak at what we're getting on board!

Los Danzantes: Joven, Reposado & Anejo

Los Danzantes is a restaurant group that owns the famous mezcalería - Corazón de Maguey ("heart of the maguey") - in the bustling neighbourhood of Coyoacán, Mexico City. With a superb food menu they also stock an excellent selection of hand crafted Mezcals and in 1997 the group decided to purchase a palenque, or distillery, in Santiago Matatlán, in the state of Oaxaca, south-west Mexico, and began making their own brand of mezcals including Alipus. These hand crafted Mezcals, distilled in copper potstills are produced by Master distiller Joel Antonio Cruz Jr. from the Espadin agave in the region of Santiago Matatlan, Tlacolula, Oaxaca.

Joven ~ "A clear Mezcal with green herb and cooked agave aromas with fresh green citrus fruit flavours with a slight sweet smoky finish This is a smooth warming Mezcal that has been bottled immediately after distillation, without resting in wood."
Reposado ~ "Aged for eleven months in Nevier oak barrels. Combination of matured fruits and smoky aromas are confirmed on the palate with honey and caramel flavours that lead to a smooth but well-rounded, elegant and robust finish."
Anejo ~ "Aged for sixteen months in Nevier oak barrels. Darker colour with well-matured and rounded flavours. Smooth and mellow with a long and gentle finish".

Alipus: San Andres, San Baltazar & San Juan

Alipus Mezcals are 100% Agave produced in remote pueblos in Oaxaca’s noted Mezcal region, via craft production from artisanal family distilleries. The agaves are wood-roasted in palenques (conical below-ground ovens), with the juice extracted by slow stone-milling (tahona). Fermentation takes place with native yeasts in open wood vats and is double-distilled in small wood fire copper potstills.

San Andres ~ "Fermented in cypress vats & distilled by Don Valente Angel from agave Espadín, grown at about 5000 feet on thin calciferous-soiled low hills and terraces. Complex, rich, intensely floral."
San Baltazar ~ "Fermented in pine vats & distilled by Don Cosmé Hernandez from agave Espadín, grown at about 5700 feet in hilly, white, rocky soil. Delicate and fruity, slightly sweet."
San Juan ~ "Fermented in oak vats & distilled by Don Joel Cruz from nonirrigated agave Espadín, grown in sunny mountain-top plantings in ferriferous soil at 4600 feet. Fruity, rich, smokey, pleasantly sweet."
