The premium quality of Lapponia liqueurs is based on manufacturing traditions that are centuries old. Officially it all began in 1867, when Czar Alexander II granted Anders Nordfors, a merchant living in the city of Turku, permission to make alcoholic beverages e.g. liqueurs. Lapponia liqueurs still continue this Finnish berry liqueur tradition in Turku.
All Lapponia liqueurs are made in Finland, using pure handpicked berries that have grown in nature. No preservatives are used, though the shelf life is a few years. Due to the manufacturing method (slow extraction) the berries give the liqueurs all of their taste and exquisite aroma. Each liqueur brings the pure and genuine flavours of the arctic nature together.
The first stage is to make the berry extract. First they inspect and analyse the berries. After this they are put into a vat that contains 30% abv ethanol, where the alcohol absorbs all the colour, flavour, and aroma from the berries. This stage takes 3-6 weeks, after which the seeds and skins are removed in an extractor.
This results in a very strong-tasting berry extract that is matured in a container for about 2 months, and tasted regularly to determine the right maturation degree. Then the optimum about of sugar and alcohol is added to make a liqueur. The mixture is cold-processed to clarify it and is then ready to be bottled.
Although the Lapponia liqueur manufacturing process has been modernised in the course of decades, everything is still mainly done by hand to maintain the high quality.
