Louis Sipp began his family's involvement in wine growing at the end of the First World War. Louise, the pioneering grandmother of the family, acquired the first plots of vineyard while her husband Louis was away on the Russian Front. The first vats were also bought at this time, some of which are still in use! At this time grapes were harvested on the Kirchberg hill (today classified as "Grand Cru" land) and carried in baskets on the harvesters' backs down to the presses, which were situated at the top end of the town. The first wine awards that Louis and Louise won dates back to 1920.
Louise' son Auguste joined his mother and father in the business after the war and helped expand the vineyard and cellars (which were dug into the deep chalk hills).
Etienne Sipp took over the reigns in the 1990s and has since made many modern improvements in the vineyards and in the cellars. These improvements include a real focus on soil types, and grape plantings that really show through the vartital classic wines.
Etienne has also embraced Organic farming practices, becoming fully certified in 2005. The Nature’S range of wines that we have selected showcases this commitment to the environment and the traditional love of terroir.
