Grüner Veltliner
Grüner Veltliner is a white wine varietal grown predominantly in Austria but also in the Czech Republic. In the Rhine-like wine areas west of Vienna, it can produce very pure minerally Grüners capable of a long bottle life. In the deeper clay soils of the Weinviertel, characteristics can include citrus, peach and spicy pepper notes. In a recent blind tasting organised by the Austrian Wine Marketing Board the Grüner Veltliners beat world renowned Chardonnays from Burgundy and California.
