Aquavit & Schnapps
Aquavit: Scandinavia’s Drink of Choice
When you’re looking for a celebratory drink, aquavit might not be the first alcoholic beverage that comes to mind. However, aquavit has a long and illustrious history as the first choice for many holidays and special occasions, especially in Norway and other Scandinavian countries.
Aquavit is distilled from a fermented potato or grain mash, redistilled in the presence of flavouring agents, filtered with charcoal and usually bottled without ageing. Norweigan aquavit will almost all be aged (in Sherry casks), whilst Swedish and Danish aquavit are normally not aged, you will find some products that are. Various aromatic flavourings are employed, usually including caraway, dill and coriander seed. Also frequently used are lemon or orange peel, cardamom, star anise, aniseed and fennel. To be called an aquavit the product needs to contain predominately dill or caraway, if not it will be called snaps.
