A superb winery from the region of Bierzo in Northwest Spain. The region enjoys a unique microclimate, resulting from the combination of both Atlantic and Mediterranean continental climate, while the steep slate-soiled hillsides are perfect for the production of high-quality grapes.
Bodega del Abad was founded in 2000 with a hi-tech winery, and now has 35 hectares ofvines split between the red Mencia grape and the white Godello. The majority of the vineyards are at high altitude and some are over 100 years old. Both red and white wines range from light, fresh unoaked styles to powerful complex barrel aged wines. The value for money across the board is outstanding.
From vineyards at 650 metres altitude in Valtuille de Arriba. The vines are 80 years old on average, while the soil is a combintion of slate, quartzite and other minerals.
A pre-fermentation maceration occurs at low temperatures to enhance primary flavours. The juice is fermented in stainless steel conical tanks at a controlled temperature for 15 days. The total maceration period is 20 days. Aged in French oak barrels for 12 months before bottling, then a further 6 moths in bottle before release.
Grape Varieties: 100% Mencia.
Farming Practices: Contains Sulfites - Vegan.
Tasting Notes: A plump, ripe expression of Mencia, with notes of dark berry and cherry, white pepper, roasted wild herbs and a touch of well-handled oak spice lurking in the background. The palate is full, yet approachable with fine tannins and balanced, mineral acidity.
Food Match: Ideal with lamb cutlets and smoked goat.
