Gilbert Late Harvest Riesling
Gilbert Family Wines have their roots in the Eden Valley of South Australia, where Joseph Gilbert was one of the first to plant grapes. They still make delicious Rieslings there under the Gilbert + Gilbert label. Now, however, the majority of their wines come from the fashionable regions of Orange and Mudgee in New South Wales. Simon Gilbert established the winery in 2004 after working for more than two decades as winemaker for some of the top producers in the area. Simon and his son, Will, specialise in cool climate wines with a common thread of elegance, purity and structure This winery is right at the front of Australia's new wave, making a wide range of wines which balance traditional styles and techniques with the more experimental.
From the foothills of Mt Canobolas, Orange at an altitude of 845 meters above sea level. These vineyards have extremely fertile soil rich in volcanic ash, basaltand deep well drained clay loam.
The long days and cool temperature make this the ideal environment for Riesling, allowing the fruit to develop intense aroma and maintain flavour. The fruit was hand-harvested, with only fully botrytised bunches chosen, and fermented at low temperatures to retain the concentrated fruit character, before being cooled and treated to leave the residual sugar at 90g/l.
Tasting Note: A sweet wine of startling value and purity with luscious pineapple, marmalade and lime notes with a fine thread of acidity that balances the intense sweetness.
Food Match: Ideal with puddings such as a lemon tart or tropical sorbets
