Amathus City Store Staff
Richard Cavagin - Store Manager
Back in Canada my French landlady would leave leftovers of classic wines at the bottom of the stairs for me to try – she would shout up – Richard! – in her wonderful accent to let me know a bottle was waiting, the door would slam behind her, and there it would be… maybe a Burgundy, a Rhône… Loire, Bordeaux, Jura, Savoie… (always French!) It was all a revelation and quickly led to a desire to know as much as possible about wine.
Studies and examinations followed with the renowned George Brown wine programme in Toronto, as well as achieving WSET to Level 3 Advanced, and becoming a Certified Sommelier with The Court of Master Sommeliers.
Moving to London has been amazing and I’ve worked in restaurants as a sommelier - notably with Jason Atherton and managing the wine programme at Michelin-starred venue, The Harwood Arms in Fulham - as an on-trade wine sales rep, and also as a returning wine judge for IWC and SWA (well, someone has to taste and score 100 wines in a day!)
It’s an exciting opportunity to work at Amathus. With such a vast and varied range of wines and spirits, it’s the perfect place to continue to grow and learn – because with wine and spirits the learning fortunately never stops! But most importantly it’s the best place to be to share these amazing products with our Amathus customers.
Favourite tipple:
This changes all the time and of course, my first love is fine wine - Syrah, old Barolo and good Chardonnay.
I’m exploring vermouths, amari and liqueurs and Amathus is the best possible place to be for this! Current favourites are the earthy, floral and complex French gentian liqueur Suze. Or maybe a quinquina from Corsica – the Cap Corse rouge – both served simply over ice with citrus.
I must mention Islay Scotch Whisky – or indeed any Scotch - with that hint of smoke, peat, and a lick of the sea. A must-try dram is the Caol Ila and Amathus 12 year Cask Strength collaboration bottling.
Ask me in a week and I’ll have some new drinks ideas for you!
