Merlot grapes are a popular variety grown worldwide, known for producing medium-bodied red wines with soft tannins and fruit-forward flavours. The grape is believed to have originated in the Bordeaux region of France and is now widely cultivated in countries like the United States, Chile, and Italy. Merlot is often blended with other red grape varieties, but single-varietal bottlings can showcase notes of black cherry, plum, and chocolate. The grape also has a reputation for being easy to grow and ripen earlier than other Bordeaux varieties. Wines made with Merlot, including St Emilion and Pomerol Bordeaux, and New World styles like those from Chile & California. Merlot is a native variety of Bordeaux in southwest France.
