Freisa is an ancient Langhe grape variety, believed to be related to Nebbiolo. Here it is given a new lease of life by leading Barolo producer Vajra, making a superb wine in its own right.
Freisa is an ancient local grape variety from Langhe that is fighting for survival. Part of the history and identity of Piemonte since ancient times, Freisa is one of the closest relatives of Nebbiolo. This wine is Vajra’s homage to this rare treasure of Langhe. Top Barolo producer Vajra make perhaps the finest example of this rare variety; a wine that has built up a cult following over time. Grapes for this wine are sourced from the San Ponzio vineyard in the commune of Barolo. They are grown at an altitude of 390-410 metres above sea level, on a clay-rich soil. The vines are the result of a massale selection from an old vineyard. The wine is aged for 26 months in large old oak casks before bottling. Deep ruby red in the glass, this wine has aromas of red berries, tobacco, roses, and white pepper with hints of hay and wild herbs. Full-bodied with balanced acidity and alcohol, it is savoury and rich with a long finish of black fruits and spices.
