Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte is one of Graves’s most historic properties, dating back to the mid-fourteenth century. Now under the careful stewardship of the Cathiard family, the property boasts an enviable array of advantages – organic certification (and working towards biodynamic certification), prime land on Gunzian gravel terroir, and even its cooperage to produce French oak barrels optimised for the maturation of its wines. The 2006 offers an elegant yet rich style of wine, perfect for drinking this year (although it could age up to five more years depending on personal preference). The characteristic minerality of the Graves region forms the wine’s core, while tertiary notes of tobacco, leather and woodsmoke perfectly complement ripe dark fruits, herbaceous undertones and hints of chocolate. The perfect steak wine, this would also suit Greek-style barbecued lamb. This wine was awarded 93 points by both Robert Parker and Neal Martin.
