At a Glance

The 2006 Cos d’Estournel stands out as a remarkable expression of Saint-Estèphe in a vintage that challenged many. Crafted from a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, this wine showcases the estate’s mastery in both vineyard management and cellar technique. Deep garnet with a subtle brick hue, its appearance hints at the graceful evolution in bottle.

Aged between 18 and 25 months in French oak—80% of which was new—this wine has developed a complex and refined aromatic profile. Layers of rosemary, dried cherries, baked blackcurrants, and mincemeat pie mingle with subtler notes of fallen leaves, pencil shavings, and cedar. Spices and liquorice add further depth to the bouquet. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet delivers remarkable intensity. Rich cassis and dark fruits show purity and precision, supported by fine-grained, silky tannins. The oak influence contributes subtle toast and spice, lending structure without overwhelming the fruit. Mineral nuances carry through a persistent, elegant finish. This is a wine of poise and power, notable for its masculine structure and classical balance. Sustainable viticulture practices underscore a commitment to terroir and longevity, with drinking potential extending confidently from 2015 through 2030. An ideal pairing for roasted meats, aged cheeses, or earthy mushroom dishes, this vintage illustrates how precision and care can transcend the limitations of the growing season.

Robert Parker tasted in February 2009 - "The exceptional 2006 Cos d’Estournel is composed of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. 55% of the production was utilised. Revealing superb intensity for a 2006 as well as an inky/blue/purple colour, and a sweet bouquet of blue and black fruits, liquorice, graphite, and charcoal, this full-bodied 2006 possesses high levels of sweet tannin. This wine is characterised by a freshness and precision that give it a 1996-like affinity. Enjoy this beautifully concentrated, exceptionally pure, statuesque Cos d’Estournel over the next 20-25 years. By the way, it was bottled without any fining or filtration."
