Description

The island of Madeira today is almost synonymous with the rich, semi-oxidative style of fortified wine to which it gives its name; once the toast of the world, famously used to herald the Declaration of Independence, its status declined amid the phylloxera plague and Prohibition, before its recent rediscovery as one of the world’s greatest wine styles. Perhaps no single other producer is best place to give a taste of this turbulent history than D’Oliveras, whose stocks of wine date back to 1850 – hence its frequent appearance on lists of the oldest wines on general sale. This bottle, produced by the ‘estufagem’ process in which casks are heated to mimic the conditions on transatlantic voyages that gave rise to the distinctive maderised style, is made predominantly from the local speciality of the Tinta Negra Mole grape, blended with a small amount of Boal for added complexity.

Tasting Notes

It is noticeably fresher and less lusciously sweet than other Madeira wines, with aromas of apricot, mahogany, raisin and vanilla. Traditionally served with walnuts as an aperitif, the balanced nature of this wine means it can be served alongside a variety of main courses, and is a revelation with game.

Delivery

Challenge 21 - You must be 18 or over to buy alcohol. You must not buy alcohol on behalf of those under 18. We apply the "Challenge 21" policy to all delivery and collection orders. We will not supply if the person receiving or collecting orders appears under the age of 21.

We charge a flat fee of £5.95 for delivery if your order is under 20kg, and £10 inc VAT if it is over 20kg. Free delivery is available for orders above £125 (inc VAT).

For Standard Delivery, we will ship items within 2 working days, provided the order is placed before midday.

For Express Delivery, we will ship items the same day, provided the order is placed before midday.

Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive a shipment confirmation email, and the following day, you will receive a text from our courier with a delivery window. If your order has not yet arrived, please email [email protected] and quote your order number.
