Domaine Doussot-Rollet is a small family-run domain with a history dating back to the mid-19th century in the commune of Chorey-lès-Beaune in the Côte d’Or region of Burgundy. In comparison to many of its neighbours, the domaine is relatively small, comprising just 4.75 hectares. The domaine remains a family affair to this day, with Thomas Troussard, the son-in-law of the owner, serving as the head winemaker.
The estate is managed following traditional sustainable practices, having undertaken vine tilling for five generations. The domain is currently working toward attaining HVE certification (the highest French environmental certification), withholding the use of weedkillers and only treating diseases when strictly necessary. The vines on the estate are old, ranging between 40 and 95 years old, a testament to the generations of sustainable management undertaken by the domaine.
The Clos de la Roche appellation is one of the lesser-known appellations in the Côte de Nuits region, despite its exceptional terroir, which produces some top-quality Pinot Noir. Comprising just under 17 hectares, the Clos de la Roche appellation attained its Grand Cru status in December 1936, making it one of the newer Grand Cru plots in the region. The appellation is a semi-monopole with a long history that has involved adjustments of boundaries between climats. The Crand Cru plots in Clos de la Roche are a southerly extension of the Grand Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin. Limestone dominates in Clos de la Roche, with soil depth barely 30cm, laden with large boulders, which gave birth to the name of the climat (“roche” translates to rock in English).
Under the stewardship of winemaker Thomas Troussard, Domaine Doussot-Rollet has been producing wines of exceptional precision, drinking well both in their youth and after ageing. The domaine follows traditional vinification techniques, ageing their wines in oak barrels. A maximum of 15% new French oak is used across their range, with the wines being released to market 2 years after harvest.
The resulting product is a supple but virile Pinot Noir with seducing notes of red and black berries supported by an earthy undertone. The wine has a densely tannic texture with outstanding aromatic richness, with exceptional ageing potential. These tannins make the wine a great pairing with veal or roasted lamb. At the same time, its aromatic intensity allows it to stand up to intense Asian dishes such as glazed poultry—a truly exceptional and versatile wine.
