Domaine du Gros Noré, based in La Cadière-d’Azur, is one of the great names in Bandol. Winemaker Alain Pascal took over from his father in the late 1990s, transforming the family’s vineyards, once used by Château de Pibarnon, into a leading independent domaine. Working organically since the start (certified in 2020), Pascal favours minimal intervention and traditional methods. His wines are bottled without fining or filtration, and with very low sulphur. The estate is particularly prized for its Mourvèdre-based reds, but its rosé is now seen as a benchmark of the appellation, frequently compared to the legendary Domaine Tempier.
It delivers powerful aromatics of bramble fruit, black plum, espresso and dried herbs, with savoury hints of iron and soy. The palate is dense and earthy, with a burly structure and ripe, broad tannins that frame the wine’s concentrated fruit. There’s immense character here, with plenty of ageing potential, but also a raw, compelling presence in its youth for those who favour intensity and complexity.
