Head Wines was created in 2006 by Alex Head with a focus on Rhône varietals from the Barossa and Eden Valleys in South Australia. All of the vineyards are farmed sustainably using organic principles where possible; yields are controlled and grapes are hand-picked. Alex has always been a keen drinker and follower of the wines of the Rhone Valley, thus the "Head Style" is one of optimum ripeness with elegance, freshness, balance and purity of fruit attained by slow, gentle winemaking and careful maturation. Alex has been rewarded with high scores for his wines from all the major critics and is widely viewed as one of the most talented and exciting young winemakers in Barossa.
Very small parcels of fruit are sourced from old, dry-grown, hand-pruned and picked vineyards of 131- 160 years of age in the Eden and Barossa Valleys, grown on red and yellow clays, quartz and ironstone.
Whole-bunch fermented without crushing or temperature control thanks to natural yeasts. Hand plunged and foot-trodden. Racked once during an ageing of 12 months in large French oak barrels of which 10% are new. A small percentage of old vine mataro is added for balance.
Grape: 92% Grenache, 8% Mataro
Tasting Notes: Gorgeously perfumed raspberry and red cherry notes with a background of gentle sweet spice. Elegant and textured, a gloriously seductive expression of Grenache.
Food Match: Ideal with roast lamb and duck
Farming Practices: Vegan - Contains Sulfites
Closure: Screwcap
