Michter’s Distillery is one of America’s oldest whiskey producers, with roots tracing back to 1753 when it was founded by Swiss Mennonite brothers John and Michael Shenk in Pennsylvania. Initially focused on rye whiskey using local grains and limestone-filtered water, Michter’s was among the pioneers in American whiskey production. The distillery weathered many challenges, including Prohibition, changing ownership, and a lengthy hiatus, but its legacy endured.
In the modern era, Michter’s brand was revitalised in the 1990s by Joseph J. Magliocco and Richard Newman, relocating production to Kentucky, the heartland of bourbon. Michter’s is known for a rigorous grain-to-bottle process emphasising small batch and single cask craftsmanship. The company has innovated in barrel ageing, barrelling proof, and warehouse management to optimise flavour and maturation.
The flagship Michter’s 20yr Bourbon reflects this dedication. Aged for two decades in new, fire-charred American white oak barrels between 17 to 20 years, it is bottled at 114.2 proof (57.1% ABV). The barrels are filled at a lower entry proof of 103, unlike many bourbons, improving the extraction of sweetness and wood influence for a balanced profile. Kentucky’s seasonal climate encourages complex maturation dynamics, yielding a rich, elegant spirit.
Tasting highlights include rich caramel, butterscotch, vanilla, cedar spice, toasted oak, blueberry cobbler, and warm baking spices, complemented by subtle notes of dry chocolate and root beer. The finish is long and warming with layered complexity often absent in other aged bourbons. Only around 557 bottles are produced, making it a rare collector’s item.
