Pasaeli is a pioneering winery proudly representing Turkish winemaking on the international stage. Turkey is blessed with a wealth of unique indigenous grape varieties (some estimate over 1,000, compared to Italy’s 600), a Mediterranean climate, and centuries of winemaking tradition, and is, in fact, the world’s sixth-largest grape grower. The wine production scene, however, is limited to smaller, boutique producers who are mostly export-focused – among them, Pasaeli. Founded initially as a fine wine importer in 1993, the company shifted to growing and vinifying its wines around the turn of the millennium, and bottled its first wine in 2010.
Their grapes are all sourced from single vineyards around Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, near Izmir, Tekirdag and Canakkale (close to the ancient city of Troy). All of the grapes are hand-harvested, and exclusively natural yeasts are employed during the vinification process, resulting in wines that are authentic expressions of their unique terroirs. 6N is predominantly made from the indigenous Karasakiz black grape variety, blended with a splash of Merlot sourced from a high-altitude single vineyard near the archaeological site of Troy. The unusual name of this wine is a pun – ‘6N’ is pronounced the same way as the Turkish word for ‘gold’, referencing Pasaeli’s opposition to gold mining around their vineyards.
In the cellar, the wine was matured for a very short time (four months) in oak barrels, softening the tannins while bringing the bright fruit of Karasakiz to the forefront. The wine pours a pale red in the glass, seducing with its lively aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry and fresh pomegranate. On the palate, the wine is refreshingly bright, with red-fruit flavours and a complex finish. Pair with light Turkish mezze, preferably in the sunshine.
