The Glendronach

Situated in the East Highland hills, deep in the valley of Forgue, protected by bramble thorns and a parliament of rooks, The Glendronach has been quietly mastering the art of sherry cask maturation since 1826. What was once the Boynsmill Estate is now the proud home of The Glendronach. Its founder, James Allardice, was an early pioneer of sherried malt whisky, dedicating his life to perfecting the craft.

The Glendronach sources its sherry casks from Spain, while everything else is gathered closer to home. Water comes from springs in the Balnoon Hills, barley is grown locally, and even the washbacks are made from native Scottish larch.

The distillery’s still men work not by numbers, but by sight, sound, smell, and taste. Their saxophone-shaped stills are designed to capture a complex range of notes — from the bright top notes of berries and Seville orange to the deep base tones of chocolate, leather, and tobacco. Even as it runs from the still, The Glendronach reveals itself as a rich, full-bodied, and elegant spirit — qualities that only deepen as it matures in Spanish sherry casks within the distillery’s cool, dark warehouses.

“Our rich stock dates back to the sixties. The casks are Spanish oak from Andalucia. They give a velvety texture with notes of fruitcake, sultana and cloves. The Pedro Ximenez casks add sweetness, depth and intensity. The Oloroso casks create a drier, nuttier flavour.”
— Rachel Barrie, Master Distiller

And then, the waiting begins. Years pass. Decades, even. Until the time is right. Until the moment comes to liberate this rich, ruby nectar from its luxurious resting place.
