The Baden region is one of Germany’s largest, and is something of a hidden gem. Although its wines are hugely popular in their home country, they have yet to hit the heights abroad of wines from the Mosel or Saar. This is a shame, as the quality of the wines produced here will delight all discerning consumers! Baden itself is directly adjacent to Alsace in France, and is sheltered from the cold by the geological features of the Black Forest and Vosges. This additional warmth when compared to other wine-growing districts on a similar latitude or within Germany means that the region can produce excellent ripe red wines, as well as whites – which is what we are proud to introduce to the UK here.
Weingut Rieger is one of the most exciting producers in Baden. Formerly a farm, of which the vineyard was only a small component, the family decided forty or so years ago to focus exclusively on their winemaking operations, giving over the entire agricultural holdings to grape-growing. The result is a bucolic landscape planted with many of the traditional grape varieties that characterise the Baden region. Family-owned with the capable second-generation Philipp Rieger at the helm, Weingut Rieger puts sustainability at its core. The estate has been fully organic since 2005, and achieved biodynamic status (certified by Demeter) in 2010, early on in the widespread adoption of biodynamic methods within the wine world. The winery eschews all pesticides and herbicides, instead focusing on more natural methods through which to keep the grapes free of disease, such as encouraging the presence of insects and creating homeopathic biodynamic ‘preparations’.
This delicious dry red wine, from the Pinot Noir grape (known as Spatburgunder in its native Germany), will show wonderfully complex aromas of ripe red cherry, leather, wild strawberry and a hint of mushroom. On the palate, it will be light- to medium-bodied, with a crisp minerality and a long finish. The perfect match for a charcuterie board, Weingut Rieger Alte Rebe Pinot Noir will also pair well with pork, venison or game – or can be lightly chilled and taken to a picnic!
