Established in 1999 by the former Technical Director of Vega Sicilia and veteran winemaker, Javier Zaccagnini, Aaalto was born from a shared ambition to create a wine that authentically expressed the diverse terroirs of Ribera del Duero. This vision attracted the backing of the Masaveu and Nozaleda families in 2006, whose involvement further elevated the estate’s capacity for precision and depth.
Originally vinified in rented facilities in Roa, Aalto’s growing reputation led to the creation of a purpose-built winery in Quintanilla de Arriba in 2004. Nestled within a 15-hectare estate, the winery marries cutting-edge winemaking technology with a design that reflects and respects the surrounding landscape. Completed in 2016, the final phase of construction prioritised sustainability and community integration.
Today, Aalto controls 130 hectares of old indigenous Tinto Fino vines, with the oldest being over 100 years old, planted across more than 200 individual plots spanning nine different municipalities within Ribera del Duero. Each site offers a unique terroir: from the limestone soils of Quintanilla de Arriba, to the calcareous clays of La Aguilera, the sandstone of Fresnillo, and the fluvial gravel of Moradillo. With altitudes ranging between 750 and 950 metres, and diverse microclimates, the grapes ripen at different times, and the estate harvests them individually.
Aalto employs sustainable viticulture practices, using no herbicides or chemical fertilisers, favouring short pruning for vine health, and works with extremely low yields to ensure concentration and integrity of fruit. Each plot is harvested and vinified separately under the guidance of head winemaker Mariano García, who continues to craft wines with the same depth and balance that have defined his decades-long career.
Made from 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo), Aalto presents a deep, vibrant red hue. The nose reveals a complex aromatic spectrum encompassing ripe red fruits, liquorice, and subtle spice, supported by mineral tones and elegant oak integration. On the palate, the wine is structured and fleshy, yet lifted by fresh acidity and a supple tannin structure. The finish is long, balanced, and refined, with a distinct sense of place drawn from the region’s rugged landscapes and extreme climate.
