When Fess Parker bought Foxen Canyon Ranch in 1988, his plan was to run cattle, plant a few acres of vineyard and perhaps someday, establish a small winery that he could pass on to future generations
His two daughters are still involved in the winery today and now the home ranch vineyard has earned a great reputation for the quality of its Rhône and Burgundian varietals.
Located in Santa Barbara County, the Californian wine region made famous by the cult movie Sideways, the winery grows vineyards in some of the most prestigious AVA such as Sta. Rita Hills, Santa Maria Valley, Red Hills Lake County and Rutherford
Viticulture: The grapes come from Ashley's vineyard located in Santa Rita Hills AVA. The vineyard was planted in 1997 with 5 different Pinot Noir clones, including Pommard and Dijon from Burgundy.
The vines benefit from a cooling influence from the Pacific Ocean which is just 12 miles away. The sandy soil has a strong maritime origin
Winemaking: Grape are harvested manually by night and hand-sorted. 25% whole bunches are used, while during fermentation regular pigeage is used early on to aid extraction. The wine is basket-pressed then aged in 4 year-old French barrels for 18 months
Grape Varieties: 100% Pinot Noir
Tasting Notes: Expressive, pure Pinot Noir, loaded with silky damson and red berry notes with a touch of dark cherry adding richness. Hints of game and pepper complete the picture, while the palate rolls out with plump, succulent fruit and fine, elegant tannins
Food Match: Ideal with poultry such as chicken, quail and duck
