Giraud’s winemaking philosophy is centred around the influence of the Argonne Forest, which brings his wines intense minerality and finesse. For every tree used to make his barrels, Giraud ensures that there are more replanted in order to keep the forest flourishing. Their signature style is to ferment and age their wines in Argonne oak. Their Argonne 2014 is a blend of 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay. Vinified and then aged for 12 months in 100% new Argonne oak barriques, followed by a further 7 years on the lees.
Established in Äy in 1625, Henri Giraud is one of the oldest family-run Champagne houses. Their grapes are all grown on the chalky slopes of the Montagne de Reims, and the vineyards have no residue of herbicide or pesticides, as a result of their respect for terroir and organic viticulture. Claude Giraud, current CEO, was the first to release Champagne under his family name. They now have a loyal following and a global presence. Together with his Chef de Cave, Sébastien Le Golvet, Claude combines wine-making expertise with contemporary practices.
On the palate, Giraud’s Argonne 2014 has flavours of crisp green apple, a hint of citrus and a burst of pastry exploding onto the palate with some subtle sweet spices, all beautifully balanced with vibrant acidity. This cuvee is energetic and lively, with great intensity and opulent texture brought by the Argonne oak. The reserve wines date back to 1990 in Giraud’s own version of the solera, added to the wine, they bring an individuality and complexity to this wine that is not found elsewhere.
This opulent cuvee is best enjoyed with cured meats, soft and mild cheeses such as Goats Cheese, as well as with shellfish, pork, poultry dishes.
