The first traditional method sparkling wine crafted from indigenous Armenian grape varieties, Keush sources its grapes from several different growers based in the village of Khachik in the mountainous region of Vayots Dzor, Armenia. Founded in 2013 by Vahe Keushguerian, a trade veteran who had previously worked in Italy and the United States, Keush now produces approximately 5,000 cases a year.
Situated some 5,000 feet (1750m) above sea level, the vineyards in Khachik are amongst the highest in the world and the highest elevated in the Northern Hemisphere. The region is characterised by extreme weather conditions with snowy winters and arid hot summers, hence the name Extremis. The terroir consists of rich volcanic soils that give the wine of the region much of its unique character.
These extreme conditions mean that only indigenous grape varieties flourish, with Extremis made from 100% Areni grapes. The grapes are harvested from un-grafted own-rooted vines aging between 60-100 years old. The wine is age for a minimum of 22 months on the lees prior to disgorgement, providing it with complex biscuity notes. Post-disgorgement, and in true brut-nature style, there is no additional dosage resulting in an extra dry expression of the wine.
Delicate salmon pink in colour, Extremis is expressive, with layered and complex hints of red berry, apple, orange peel, and biscuit, with an underlying mineral note. The wine is driven by zippy acidity and has notes of red berries and a long mineral finish. The wine's minerality and zippy acidity make it a great accompaniment to light seafood dishes such as oysters or prawns, or alongside a light salad.
