Aberlour Distillery, located in the heart of Speyside near the confluence of the Lour Burn and River Spey, was founded in 1879 by James Fleming, a local philanthropist and grain merchant. Fleming invested significantly in the community, funding local infrastructure such as town halls, hospitals, and bridges, while building a distillery that utilised pure spring water from St Drostan’s Well. The site’s water source, filtered through granite and peat from the Ben Rinnes Mountain slopes, is a defining feature that contributes to Aberlour’s soft, rich whisky character.
Aberlour’s whisky is primarily matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and sherry casks, with between 25% to 50% matured in sherry casks. This cask influence creates a complex interplay of rich dried fruits, spice, and sweetness characteristic of Speyside malts, balanced with malted barley’s natural sweetness. Peat use is minimal, allowing the distillery’s fruit-forward style to shine.
Limited Aberlour 1989 33yr is a single cask expression aged exclusively in a bourbon hogshead (cask #3651) for over three decades, bottled in 2023 at 42.4% ABV. Its long maturation in high-quality American oak casks allows for deep flavour development. The nose unveils vibrant aromas of orange zest, salted caramel, poached plums, and ripe pears. On the palate, white ripe fruits mingle with gentle vanilla, warming spice, and a subtle peppery kick, underscored by malt sweetness. The finish is delicately drying, with notes of blood orange providing a lasting balance of fruit and spice.
