Founded in 1776, Louis Roederer is a family-owned, independent Champagne house with a well-deserved reputation for quality. It is managed by Frédéric Rouzaud, the seventh generation to be at the helm.
In 1876, Louis Roederer created the now-famous Cristal at the request of Alexander II. This once intensely sweet wine is now one of the most luscious, deeply flavoured champagnes available, with the '88, '89 and '90 among the greatest Cristals ever released.
Louis Roederer’s best-selling non-vintage blend for almost 40 years, Brut Premier, has been replaced by the Collection serries a few years ago (first being Collection 242, as the 242th blend since the foundation of the House). This new multi-vintage blend was created by Chef du Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon in response to increasingly warm vintages. The cuvée aims to capture freshness and is based on a perpetual reserve which focuses on acidity and minerality.
"Our thought process began more than 10 years ago. The facts were undeniable: climate change had been affecting the Champagne region over the past 30 years and we saw this as an opportunity to harvest extra mature grapes at the end of earlier harvests.
Each Collection is a change of gear, a new chapter in the Champagne House's world of taste. Always unique, yet always decidedly Roederer!"
Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, Cellar Master
Louis Roederer's 245th blend takes advantage of a particularly remarkable 2020 harvest: a dry, continental year of perfect maturity that produced juicy, well-structured, aromatic grapes, resulting in dense, full-bodied wines with a perfect balance of substance and freshness. Collection 245 therefore offers us a complex symphony in a wine of remarkably generous and flavourful intensity.
The Collection 245 is made up of 55% of the 2020 harvest, 35% of the Perpetual reserve (for balance and freshness) and 10% reserve wines, aged in French oak foudres (for complexity and depth), some being young wines from the Cristal estate. It is aged for nearly 4 years on the lees. It has an impressive density of fruit, releasing complex flavours of citrus and yellow fruit; pure, intense notes nuanced by a hint of smoke. It has a great cellar aging potential.
