Org de Rac is an award-winning, organically-certified estate located near Picketberg in the region of Swartland, today the source of many of the country’s most exciting wines. Org de Rac was established in 2001 as one of the first fully organic producers of South Africa and in 2005, the first wines were produced from vineyards on south facing slopes.
The wines are crafted by talented veteran winemaker Frank Meaker who has just overseeen the shift towards completely vegan production methods. A wide range of wines are made, all with the common thread of great value and varietal definition.
The vineyards were planted in 2013 on a south-facing slope with the 1.1 hectares of Verdelho at the bottom of the hill followed by the 1.1 hectares of Roussanne and 1.1 hectares of Chenin Blanc at the top. A range of cover crops are grown and biodiversity is encouraged amongst the vines. Only natural, organically certified treatments are used.
The low yielding vines are harvested late to ensure maximum ripeness. A combination of old and new oak and a variety of barrel sizes are used for fermentation and ageing
Grape: 51% Verdelho, 28% Roussanne, 21% Chenin Blanc
Tasting Note: White peach and greenage flavours abound while a fine thread of lemon acidty runs through the wine. Richness comes from a hint of almond touched with a suggestion of vanilla oak. An elegant, intriguing white of great appeal.
