Pasaeli is a pioneering winery proudly representing Turkish winemaking on the international stage. Turkey is blessed with a wealth of unique indigenous grape varieties (some estimate over 1,000, compared to Italy’s 600), a Mediterranean climate, and centuries of winemaking tradition, and is, in fact, the world’s sixth-largest grape grower. The wine production scene, however, is limited to smaller, boutique producers who are mostly export-focused – among them, Pasaeli. Founded initially as a fine wine importer in 1993, the company shifted to growing and vinifying its wines around the turn of the millennium, and bottled its first wine in 2010.
Their grapes are all sourced from single vineyards around Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, near Izmir, Tekirdag and Canakkale (close to the ancient city of Troy). All of the grapes are hand-harvested, and exclusively natural yeasts are employed during the vinification process, resulting in wines that are authentic expressions of their unique terroirs. ‘SYS’ takes its name from the three major grape varieties that constitute the blend – Sultaniye, Yapincak and Sidalan. All three are indigenous to Turkey and bring their unique characteristics to this fresh, moreish wine.
The grapes are sourced from their terroir-focused vineyards and matured separately to preserve their aromas, before being blended. Lees contact during ageing results in a richer, more rounded style. This is a deliciously drinkable, fruit-forward white wine with notes of mango, peach, and white flowers, finishing with a mineral character. Drink as an aperitif, or savour with traditional Turkish borek.
