Pasaeli is a pioneering winery proudly representing Turkish winemaking on the international stage. Turkey is blessed with a wealth of unique indigenous grape varieties (some estimate over 1,000, compared to Italy’s 600), a Mediterranean climate, and centuries of winemaking tradition, and is, in fact, the world’s sixth-largest grape grower. The wine production scene, however, is limited to smaller, boutique producers who are mostly export-focused – among them, Pasaeli. Founded initially as a fine wine importer in 1993, the company shifted to growing and vinifying its wines around the turn of the millennium, and bottled its first wine in 2010.
Their grapes are all sourced from single vineyards around Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, near Izmir, Tekirdag and Canakkale (close to the ancient city of Troy). All of the grapes are hand-harvested, and exclusively natural yeasts are employed during the vinification process, resulting in wines that are authentic expressions of their unique terroirs. This exceptional wine sources its Yapincak grapes from their indigenous terroir – the European part of Turkey, bordering Greece. Pasaeli champions old vines and heritage grape varieties, and this wine utilises both, with 50-year-old vines from a vineyard at an altitude of 200m being used.
The wine derives its golden colour from the Yapinicak grape’s golden spots on its skins. Lees ageing and a small proportion of French oak ageing add body and complexity. Citrus fruits dominate the nose at first, before the aromas unfold to reveal ripe stone fruit and blossoms. The crisp, fresh palate is well-balanced with a mineral finish. Pair this with grilled sea bream.
