Today, Emma Watson is best known for her starring role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series. However, she also has a close connection with the drinks industry. Her father is the proud owner of a domaine in Chablis, instilling in her a genuine love of the Burgundian terroirs and traditions. Now, along with her brother Alex, she has demonstrated that such a renowned wine region can also create an incredible gin. Sustainability is placed front and centre, starting with the certified carbon-neutral gin’s base spirit – it is crafted from Chardonnay grape skins usually discarded after the winemaking process has finished. Reusing the grape skins both reduces waste and allows an integral part of the product of the Chablis terroir to be given a second life. Social and environmental commitments such as these have led to Renais’s certification as a B Corporation. The ‘upcycled’ spirit, meanwhile, is then married with a wonderful array of botanicals, including both the familiar juniper and linden flowers and the unusual acacia honey and grain of paradise.
The result is a gin with the steely minerality and citrus character familiar to lovers of Chablis, yet also with the luxurious softness of honey and distinctly floral top notes. This will work brilliantly in a classic gin and tonic or with premium lemonade – or, for the more adventurous mixologist, the producers recommend an ‘Emma Spritz’. Simply combine gin, Teisseire elderflower syrup, lemon juice, Suze gentian liqueur and a dash of Chablis (Famille Gueguen makes an excellent example) with soda water over ice, and stir gently.
