Domaine Robert Ampeau is the epitome of traditionalist Burgundy winemaking, revered among connoisseurs for its practice of cellar-ageing its wines until at their peak – often for twenty years or more. The domaine’s holdings encompass many of Burgundy’s most renowned villages, including Volnay, Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. The wines are built for the long haul, with the grapes picked early to emphasise acidity. While an almost thirty-year-old red Burgundy is already a rare beast, a white Burgundy of a similar age is even harder to find – yet those with the patience to cellar their wines to an age such as this one will be richly rewarded. Robert Ampeau’s 1997 Meursault opens with a wonderfully savoury nose, reminiscent of dried fruit, old toasted oak and aged cheeses. The palate is hugely complex, and the finish will last a minute or more.
