The name Penley Estate comes from the amalgamation of two pioneering South Australian wine families, the Penfold’s and Tolley’s. And born of a dream of three siblings in 1988.

Today the estate is owned by sisters Ang & Bec Tolley, and like their ancestors, they are strong, resilient and determined women. Their history is a rich mix of endeavour, passion and vision with a touch of scandal and madness thrown in for good measure.

The region of Coonawarra is a 16km strip comprising of iron and nutrient-rich soil famously called terra rossa, and has become one of the most renowned terroir soils in the world.

Known in particular for its Cabernet, the wines of Coonawarra show classic cassis and blackberry flavours with enhanced characteristics of spice, aromatics and minerality derived from the soil due to its good fertility and drainage.

Maturing the wine in French oak, winemakers, Kate Goodman and Matt Tilby are committed to creating contemporary Coonawarra varietal wines.

Grape Varieties: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Farming Practices: Sustainable & Suitable for Vegetarians / Vegans

Tasting Notes: Dark and vibrant purple in colour. On the nose, you will find dark berries and black fruits, blackberry, mulberry, plum and a touch of liquorice. Subtle floral notes intertwine with the dark core of fruit. Subtle hints of smoky oak add complexity and savoury notes.

This is a complete and harmonious wine with great persistence of flavour. Bright and delicious, speaking of contemporary Coonawarra Cabernet.

Awards: Robert Parker, 91+ pts "Deep garnet-purple in colour, 2015 Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon is redolent of crème de cassis, liquorice and dark chocolate with hints of dried mint, earth and tapenade. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with generous black fruit and menthol flavours. Structured with a firm backbone, it finishes with great length"

Wine Spectator, 93pts "Dense, with sink-your-teeth-into-them tannins and concentration to the plum, cassis and blackberry flavours. Sage and rosemary accents linger in the background. Strikes the right balance between power and elegance, with grace notes of eucalyptus"

#28 in Wine Spectator Top 100 wines for 2018
