Founded in 1859 by Antonio Alves Cálem, Porto Cálem is one of the great Port houses. Upriver, on the south bank of the Douro, Quinta do Arnozelo forms the heart of Cálem wines, with 100 hectares of "A" class vines. Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and a little Tinta Barroca are at the core of their red Ports, but the house crafts a full range of Port wines at their waterfront lodge in Vila Nova de Gaia. The lodge also has an exceptional visitor centre explaining Port winemaking, welcoming 250,000 visitors a year. This is in fact the most popular Port house domestically in Portugal.
As a Portuguese house, it has built a formidable reputation for wood-aged Tawny Ports, which have exceptional depth, complexity and finesse. Those include the vintage-dated Colheita Tawnies, such as the 1961 Colheita that won Best Fortified Wine at Decanter World Wine Awards 2020, with a 97-point score. But Cálem is also recognised for the quality of its bottle-aged ruby style Ports, including a selection Vintage Ports released late to the market when fully mature.
