This 2015 English sparkling wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir from a single vineyard block and is limited to 2500 bottles. The wine was partially fermented in oak before undergoing a cumulative total of 96 months of maturation, resulting in an astonishingly textured and complex traditional-method sparkling wine with flavours of buttered toast, Danish pastries, lemon zest, and raspberry tart. Highly gastronomic, the wine pairs exceptionally well with fresh seafood dishes or Japanese cuisine.

At a Glance

Roebuck Estates has quickly become one of the most renowned names in English sparkling wine, recognised for its vineyard-led approach and commitment to extended ageing and precision in the traditional method. With over 200 acres under vine across multiple parcels in West Sussex, including some of the country’s most promising chalk and greensand soils, Roebuck brings together scale and meticulous craftsmanship in a way few English producers can.

Rare Expressions No. 19 is a single-vintage cuvée crafted only in exceptional years. The “No. 19” refers to the 2019 harvest, a near-perfect growing season that combined generous warmth with high levels of natural acidity. The blend is predominantly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, harvested from low-yielding plots and fermented in a mix of stainless steel and old French oak to build complexity and finesse. The wine underwent secondary fermentation in the bottle and was aged for over four years on the lees, resulting in a remarkable texture, precision, and length.

On the nose, Rare Expressions No. 19 reveals layers of roasted hazelnut, white peach, toasted sourdough and lemon oil, underpinned by more savoury notes of chalk, chamomile and subtle spice. The palate is taut and vertical at first, opening up to reveal yellow stone fruit, citrus pith, and a deep seam of autolytic richness. The mousse is fine and persistent, giving a lift to the wine’s mineral backbone and long, saline finish. There’s a gravitas here, a quiet intensity that suggests serious ageing potential.

Serve this with elegant, restrained dishes, such as oysters with shallot vinegar, turbot with beurre blanc, or veal sweetbreads with morels and cream. For cheese, try aged Lincolnshire Poacher or a truffled Brie de Meaux. Best decanted for a few minutes to allow full aromatic expression, and capable of maturing gracefully for 7–10 years.
