Domaine Roger Belland is a fifth-generation family estate based in Santenay, with holdings across some of Burgundy’s most prestigious appellations. The Les Cras lieu-dit in Pommard is known for its rocky, limestone-clay soils, which give the wine its distinctive grip and mineral backbone. The estate practices lutte raisonnée (sustainable farming), and grapes are hand-harvested at full phenolic ripeness. Fermentation occurs with partial whole bunches to add aromatic lift and texture, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, of which a modest portion is new, to support rather than dominate the fruit.
Deep ruby in colour, the wine opens with aromas of black cherry, red plum, crushed violets, and dried herbs, underpinned by hints of graphite and subtle oak spice. On the palate, it is firm and precise, with taut tannins framing flavours of ripe red berries, earth, and iron-rich minerality. The finish is persistent, revealing both tension and finesse typical of the best Pommard sites.
The structure and savoury complexity of this wine make it a strong match for game birds, roasted duck, or dishes featuring wild mushrooms. It also complements aged cheeses and slow-cooked meats, particularly when paired with root vegetables or earthy sauces.
