Palinka is a truly artisanal fruit brandy, with its origins in the Middle Ages as a remedy for the queen of Hungary’s arthritis. It was then widely adopted among the Hungarian peasantry, with every household distilling its own recipe from garden fruits despite an official ban. Palinka became a traditional versatile drink, fit for any occasion. Now, an almost bewildering variety of palinkas exist on the market, with all kinds of brandies made from local fruits, berries and nuts. A double distillation process is followed for a high alcoholic strength.
Tarpa Kajszibarack Palinka is distilled purely from apricots, resulting in a hugely aromatically intense spirit with marked ripe stone fruit flavours and a very clean aftertaste. Pour this palinka at room temperature in order not to muzzle the bright fruit flavours, and sip slowly, as you would a fine grappa, out of a tulip-shaped glass specifically designed to capture the aromas. This miniature allows for a perfect introduction to the world of palinka for the curious spirit-lover, as well as making for a wonderful digestif.
