One of the most prestigious names in Burgundy, Domaine de la Romanée Conti produces some of the world’s most collectable and sought-after wines. The Richebourg Grand Cru vineyard is among the estate’s crown jewels, with 1.06 hectares of old Pinot Noir vines planted on iron-rich clay-limestone soils in Vosne Romanée. These soils bring both structure and finesse, shaping a wine that is renowned for its depth, longevity, and expressive character. The 2006 vintage is a clear demonstration of the domaine’s precision and poise, even in a year marked by climatic challenges.
The growing season in 2006 was defined by a cool, wet spring and an erratic summer, requiring constant vigilance in the vineyard. The team at Domaine de la Romanée Conti responded with meticulous hand sorting and selective harvesting between the 20th and 25th of September. In the cellar, adjustments were made to suit the vintage, with a reduced proportion of whole cluster fermentation and shorter exposure to new oak before racking into seasoned barrels.
Vinification took place in traditional open-top wooden vats using native yeasts, followed by élevage in French oak barrels. The wines were bottled without fining or filtration, preserving their natural texture and site-specific character. The result is a wine of impressive complexity and restraint. The nose is lifted and aromatic, offering notes of blackberry, ripe strawberry, black tea, brine, and a subtle peppery edge. Over time in the glass, layers of spice and earthy depth begin to emerge.
On the palate, the 2006 Richebourg is elegant and finely structured, with soft but persistent tannins framing a core of dark cherry, cassis, and blue fruit. Undertones of smoked meat, iodine, and crushed stone reflect the minerality of the site, while a thread of acidity carries the wine through a long and harmonious finish. The balance between fruit, tannin, and tertiary complexity makes this wine both contemplative and deeply rewarding.
Critics have widely praised this vintage. Vinous awarded it 95 points, highlighting its “effortless balance” and layered sappiness. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rated it 93 points, noting its progression from “sweetness and light” to a “dark and brooding” complexity. Serena Sutcliffe MW described the bouquet as “very scented, spice bazaar with a touch of sweet leather,” and praised its gamey depth on the palate.
The 2006 Richebourg from Domaine de la Romanée Conti is a superb expression of Grand Cru Pinot Noir that combines vintage transparency with the estate’s signature elegance. Best served with roast pigeon or feathered game, this is a wine worthy of long-term cellaring or quiet appreciation in the glass today. A true benchmark from one of the most storied domaines in Burgundy.
