Don Julio Gonzalez’s legacy began in 1945 in the Highlands of Jalisco, where he founded the La Primavera distillery with a desire to bring his love for the land, agave and local traditions to the world. From its origins, Don Julio was committed to producing tequila of the highest quality, blending tradition with innovative approaches. Don Julio was one of the first producers in the region to age tequila beyond the standard regulations and even developed his own strain of yeast, giving his tequilas their distinctive profile to this day.
The respect of the land is a philosophy at the centre of Don Julio's production to this day. The distillery adheres to very strict specifications, which include the selection of lands, the selection of agaves, along with mandating the space between the plants and detailed protocols for their care. Grown on soils rich in clay, the Blue Webber agave is harvested once it reaches full maturity, usually between 6 and 7 years of age. The distillery still follows the original recipe developed by Don Julio Gonzalez some 80 years ago, with the mature agave undergoing a slow cooking process in masonry ovens, followed by fermentation using the unique yeast strain developed by Don Julio, and then undergoing double distillation in copper pot stills.
Launched in 2002 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the distillery, the 1942 is the most premium product released under the Don Julio brand. This añejo tequila is aged for two and a half years in ex-bourbon American White Oak casks, lending delightful notes of vanilla, toasted oak and a sweet finish. The mouth is silky smooth with vanilla at the forefront, followed by notes of tropical fruit, cooked agave and oaky notes. Best enjoyed neat or over ice, allowing one to fully enjoy the intricacies and nuances of this exceptional aged tequila.
