China’s isolated high-altitude region of Ningxia is nestled against the base of the imposing Helan mountain at over 1000 metres above sea level, towards the border with Inner Mongolia. Here, low rainfall combines with significant swings in temperature from warm days to cool nights, combining with great luminosity to create the ideal environment for growing grapes. These conditions allow many wineries to work organically in the vineyards. Although grapes were grown here 2000 years ago, the Ningxia of today began in 1998 when swathes of vines were planted after years of extensive research confirmed the enormous potential of the region.
Fei Tswei Winery planted its 85-hectare vineyard in 2013 amongst the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountain. The vineyard rests at around 1,160 metres above sea level, and is worked organically with hand harvesting. Their Magma Chardonnay is vinified in stainless steel to preserve vibrant fruit quality, and then aged for several months on fine lees to provide extra texture and depth.
This medium-weight dry white offers flavours of white peach, fresh melon, hints of cashew nut, and a touch of orange blossom; a versatile white that will pair brilliantly with egg pasta and noodles, as well as delicately cooked shellfish.
