At a Glance

Located in the heart of the Margaux appellation, Château Le Coteau is one of the few remaining independently owned and family-run estates in this renowned region of Bordeaux. The Léglise family has been at the helm for six generations, with Eric Léglise taking over in 1993. Under his stewardship, the château renewed its commitment to sustainable and traditional viticultural practices. The estate does not use any herbicides or insecticides, and the team actively promotes biodiversity, including planting hedges, fruit trees, and maintaining grassy strips to support pollinators. Château Le Coteau attained Ecocert certification in 2018, although it is yet to achieve Demeter certification for biodiverse farming practices.

The estate's 12 hectares of vineyards are planted on the classic Garonne gravel soils that define the finest Margaux terroirs. These gravelly soils, composed of pebbles and cobbles from the Massif Central and Pyrenees, rest on a subsoil of clay and sand, allowing for excellent drainage and heat retention, which are so crucial for optimal ripening of Bordeaux varieties. The vineyard's proximity to the Gironde estuary offers a moderating influence, reducing temperature extremes and promoting even ripening. This harmonious combination of soil, climate, and vine age contributes to wines of elegance, aromatic purity, and structural finesse.

The grapes are hand-harvested at full phenolic ripeness, with vinification carried out plot by plot to preserve the unique expression of each parcel. After gentle destemming and crushing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at carefully controlled temperatures, typically not exceeding 28°C. Maceration usually lasts for around 20 days, with gentle pump-overs to extract flavour and structure. Free-run and press wines are vinified separately, with the press wine selectively reintroduced depending on vintage character. The wine is then aged for 12 to 16 months in French oak barrels, one-third of which are new, undergoing regular racking and traditional fining with egg whites before bottling.

The resulting wine is a quintessential expression of Margaux's elegance. On the nose, Château Le Coteau offers notes of ripe dark fruit interwoven with subtle floral hints of violet and rose. Layers of graphite, cedar, and tobacco add classic Left Bank complexity. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with supple, well-integrated tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, mineral-tinged finish that echoes the finesse of its terroir.

Recent vintages have garnered high acclaim from critics. The 2021 vintage received scores of 92–93 from noted critic Andreas Larsson and 90–91 from René Gabriel, Markus Del Monego, and Neal Martin. The 2019 vintage saw similar praise, with 92 points from Decanter, and the 2022 vintage earned 93 points from Jeb Dunnuck and 92 from James Suckling, confirming the estate's growing reputation among Bordeaux’s rising stars.
