This is a remarkable old wine, aged in barrel since 1955. Palo Cortado is a wine initially intended for fino or amontillado production, yet the flor dies off early, and oxidative ageing takes over. This rare wine is unbelievably complex with a full spectrum of dried fruit aromas, woody spices, coffee bean, nuts and salted licorice. Despite the intensity, it retains a wonderful elegance and balance.

Challenge 21 - You must be 18 or over to buy alcohol. You must not buy alcohol on behalf of those under 18. We apply the "Challenge 21" policy to all delivery and collection orders. We will not supply if the person receiving or collecting orders appears under the age of 21.

We charge a flat fee of £5.95 for delivery if your order is under 20kg, and £10 inc VAT if it is over 20kg. Free delivery is available for orders above £120 (inc VAT).

For Standard Delivery, we will ship items within 2 working days, provided the order is placed before midday.

For Express Delivery, we will ship items the same day, provided the order is placed before midday.

Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive a shipment confirmation email, and the following day, you will receive a text from our courier with a delivery window. If your order has not yet arrived, please email [email protected] and quote your order number.

Description

Perez Barquero is a historic winery in Montilla, Spain, renowned for its cathedral-like architecture and high-quality wines. This is a completely different part of Andalucia, much further inland from the traditional “sherry triangle”. Here the Grape Pedro Ximenez is king.

The winery features high-ceilinged, silent aging halls where roughly 10,000 American oak barrels are stacked in the traditional Criadera and Solera system. A distinctive feature is its collection of large clay tinajas (earthenware jars), some holding up to 10,000 litres, used for fermentation and producing the traditional "Fresquito" wine. Their 140 hectares of vineyards are located in the prestigious Sierra de Montilla and Moriles Alto zones, characterised by white, chalky "albariza" soil that retains moisture during the region's hot, dry summers. The winery focuses almost exclusively on Pedro Ximenez grapes, which reach high natural sugar levels (over 15% alcohol) without the need for fortification in most cases.

With reserves of remarkably old wines, this is one of the few Spanish wineries to have achieved the maximum 100-point score from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate multiple times.
