Founded in 1910 by Don Próspero José Pizzorno, Pizzorno Family Estates is one of Uruguay’s most respected wineries, now led by his grandson Carlos Pizzorno. The estate is based in Canelón Chico, a subregion of Canelones located just 20 km north of Montevideo. This area benefits from the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, which moderates temperatures and brings cool nights that help retain freshness and aromatic intensity in the grapes. Fertile clay soils provide excellent water retention and encourage deep root growth, supporting low-yielding vines that deliver concentration and structure.
Tannat, originally from Madiran in southwest France, has become Uruguay’s signature grape since its introduction by Basque immigrant Pascoal Harriague in the late 19th century. In Canelones, Tannat achieves ideal tannic ripeness, producing wines that are both powerful and balanced.
The Reserva Tannat is crafted from a single parcel of low-yielding vines. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks over 8 days, with careful temperature control (25–28°C) and daily pump-overs combined with délestage to ensure even extraction of colour and tannins. The wine is then aged for 12 months in American oak barrels, chosen for their higher porosity, which encourages gentle micro-oxygenation. This process is particularly valuable with Tannat, softening its naturally firm tannins while adding subtle vanilla and spice notes.
In the glass, the wine is deep and intense, with aromas of ripe blackberries, plums, figs, and dried fruit. Notes of dark chocolate, liquorice, and vanilla layer with hints of cedar and tobacco from the oak aging. The palate is full-bodied and powerful, yet balanced by fresh acidity. Tannins are ripe, velvety, and persistent, giving the wine length and structure without harshness.
A classic partner for Uruguayan asado (wood-fired barbecue), this wine also pairs beautifully with grilled beef, slow-cooked lamb, or hearty stews, where its structure and richness complement bold flavours.
