THE MACALLAN RED COLLECTION

From their beginnings to today, The Macallan has been defined by a great regard for heritage and quality. Each expression in the collection has been aged in oak casks under the expert eye of multiple generations of whisky makers since it was distilled decades ago in The Macallan's characteristic small copper stills.

This commitment and desire have defined their methods for nearly two centuries and is perfectly expressed in the launch of their newest range. The Red Collection is an outstanding selection of remarkable and rare single malt Scotch whiskies, inspired by the efforts of Alexander Reid, and other key figures in The Macallan's history, who paved the way for today's single malt.

This collection honours the diverse spectrum of reds found in every step of the production process and displays a great regard for tradition and expertise. A carefully-picked assortment of continuous aged expressions and high aged guest releases make up The Macallan Red Collection.

THE SIX PILLARS OF THE MACALLAN

The Macallan is built on the foundation of ‘The Six Pillars’. The compelling feelings of people, place and passion have always been at the core of The Macallan’s values. This, combined with their knowledge, leads to whiskies of outstanding quality and distinctive character.

1 THE ESTATE

The Macallan Estate, the beginnings of which date back to 1543, is located in the centre of Scotland's Speyside region, spread across 485 acres of stunning Scottish scenery, with a view of the River Spey. Easter Elchies House is a classic Highland manor erected around 1700 and located in the centre of the estate. A natural ecosystem made up of more than 60,000 trees and more than 70 different types of fish, birds, and other animals may be found in the grounds of the estate.

2 CURIOUSLY SMALL STILLS

Architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners created the renowned, award-winning distillery for The Macallan. The characteristically-small stills allow new-make spirit to make an ideal amount of contact with the copper, helping to concentrate it and giving it the distinctively rich, strong and fruity flavour for which The Macallan is known. The team meticulously selects the best spirit to fill sherry-seasoned oak casks, which are subsequently allowed to age for several years. Since 1824, this dedication to craftsmanship has been obvious.

3 EXTRAORDINARY OAK CASKS

Before being filled with new-make, exceptional wood casks are created over a period of more than five years. The wait is well worth it because they provide up to 80% of the flavours and aromas in The Macallan. The oak's natural drying process enables the flavouring compounds to reach their full maturity. Then, each cask is handcrafted to our exact specifications on an individual basis. The Macallan makes unrivalled investments in the selection, construction, seasoning, and maintenance of their barrels in order to guarantee that the wood imparts precisely the right flavour and colour to the whisky.

4 SHERRY WINE

Whisky continues to be aged in hand-selected, sherry-seasoned oak barrels at The Macallan. Sherry is used to fill the barrels at the best bodegas in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. Sherry interacts with the wood to create the perfect environment for whiskey maturation - drawing flavour and colour from the barrels. The barrels are then given time to season. The casks are then transported to Speyside and The Macallan distillery for seasoning before the addition of the new-make spirit and the beginning of the wood's magical transformation.

5 NATIVE COLOR

The colour of The Macallan whiskies are all natural and range from light gold to the deepest brown. Because they respect tradition, The Macallan never add caramel colouring to any of their single malt whiskies. Instead, the complex array of colour found throughout the ranges evolves from the interplay between their new-make and oak casks that have been sherry-seasoned. To preserve colour consistency from one bottling to the next, the team must use considerable skill and attention.

6 MASTERY

Heritage, talent, creativity and a passion to excellence that is unshakeable: The Macallan’s people and their talent are what make The Macallan what it is. The Macallan has insisted on using only the best ingredients since it was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid. Their employees are responsible for The Macallan's exceptional quality. The unique flavour of the whisky is the result of their extensive understanding of wood and spirit, which has been cultivated over many generations. Their dedication and enthusiasm embody every morsel of perfect delight. To assure constant quality from barrel to bottle, our whisky mastery team tastes hundreds of samples of each cask every day.

THE MACALLAN DISTILLERY

The distillery, designed by world-renowned architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, is located in the heart of The Macallan Estate, only 400 metres from the old distillery, and next to Easter Elchies House.
The work took three years and six months to complete and the roof is one of the most complex timber structures in the world, comprising 380,000 individual components.

Sustainability has been a guiding principle at the heart of everything The Macallan does since 1824. This guiding philosophy of sustainability drove the design and construction of the distillery towards reducing its environmental impact, and The Macallan has been awarded Green Tourism Gold accreditation.

This initiative also includes responsible packaging, which emphasises the use of recyclable and sustainable materials wherever possible.

THE BEST OF TWO WORLDS

The Story of Double Cask - Every facet of The Macallan's whisky production is governed by their steadfast dedication to superior wood management, and with Double Cask, two worlds come together to produce a unique Macallan. The Double Cask range celebrates the blending of two types to bring a distinctive character to the fore while presenting well-known flavours. It is made from the ideal blend of hand-picked American and European Oloroso sherry seasoned oak casks.

To make Double Cask, they transport fresh American oak, thousands of miles to Spain, where the casks are built and sherried-seasoned before being sent to the Speyside distillery to mature. The best European oak barrels aged with sherry are then beautifully combined with these whiskies.

This marriage reflects an unrivalled investment in time and an incredible devotion to mastery for which The Macallan has been recognised since 1824, telling the tale of a journey that brings together various worlds. By mastering this combination, American and European oak casks that have been seasoned with Oloroso sherry produce a range with an exceptional mix of vanilla and delicate spice.
