A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Montagne St Emilion is the source of some of the Right Bank's best value wines, and the Notre Dame has lovely full-bodied, juicy plum and blackberry fruit with hints of spice, coffee bean and leather, with ripe meaty tannins rounding out the palate.
This gem of a wine is drinking superbly, from a great vintage and with some bottle age. Montagne St Emilion offers many of the characteristics of St Emilion itself, but at a much more accessible price, and is the source of some of the Right Bank's best value wines.
This is a small 4 hectare property on a hill overlooking St Emilion itself, and today run by siblings Sabine and Thierry Leynier, having been in the family since 1952. 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, grown on limestone and vinified and aged without any new oak. This has lovely ripe, juicy plum and blackberry fruit with hints of spice, coffee bean and leather, with ripe meaty tannins rounding out the palate.
